Why I [Impatiently Waited] Chose A Glass Toy
A co-worker and I represented Secret Pleasures at the bi-annual D.C. Leather Fleamarket & Play (LF&P) in November 2013. This was a chance to show the greater community what Secret Pleasures has to offer, as well as find handcrafted items, kink accouterments, atypical & typical sexual pleasure devices, etc. It was exciting to be among like-minded individuals. Admittedly, it was also exciting because it is not a secret that I enjoy handcrafted fare.
It is also not a secret that I had been searching for “the right glass toy” for some time. Simply put, I wanted to get off by using beautiful art! The adventure begins…
During the event I was let loose to peruse the booths (yeah, apparently I am trustworthy to be off on my own in Kink Land). Something shiny caught my eye and I stumbled upon Ben, owner and artisan of Bendable Glass. His glass dildos were simply beautiful. His willingness to let me hold one in my hands left me bouncing for joy in anticipation of finally having one to call my own. I cruised back to the Secret Pleasure’s booth and mentioned these amazing dildos and prostate plugs to my co-worker. She went to see for herself, and upon return, agreed that they were indeed some of the best we have seen. Ben, because he is amazing, agreed to create an assortment just for SP to carry in the shop. It was done, the universe heard my sexual prayers and answered kindly.
Upon counting down the days (literally) to their arrival at SP, various colors, shapes, and options danced through my head. I know my own body shape, I know how it responds to pressure and toy shapes/sizes (this is why you should masturbate, folks!) Something curved upward or bent in a semi-circle would be ideal, as this would provide pleasure to the G-spot area. Any other texture on the toy could be a bonus.
The big morning came. I almost ran up the steps as though Santa were inside (which is not recommended, because anyone that has been to the shop knows that the steps are completely dreadful/deadly) and was greeted by fellow SP staff, Ben, and his assistant. On the table lay glass dildos in various shapes, colors, sizes, and textures. A truly sexual smorgasbord! Some resembled those that had danced through my head (like sugarplums) days prior.
SP staff hand chose an assortment, thanked Ben for his hard work, and proudly displayed the toys in the case. The toy that I wanted was in the case! It felt perfect in my hands, much like an extension of myself. The full rainbow is represented throughout the dildo, from the dark blue, frosted base to the light orange tip. It couldn’t go home with anyone else, what if it would be months before Ben could bring more glass to SP? What if that toy was supposed to belong to me and I let it go?! There is no “Missed Connections” section of Craigslist for toys that are long-lost. I claimed it as mine, wrapped it in paper, and set it aside. I needed to do this for science, for orgasms, for the sake of humankind (you won’t like me when I am angry).
Hours later, what is the first thing that I did upon arriving home? Dropped it on the floor, of course! Accidental, completely accidental. Letting out a shriek while recoiling in horror, the pleasure toy hit the floor, bounced, and settled at my feet. Looking down, it wasn’t broken and celebration (a 20-second, solo, non-twerking dance party) ensued.
A dance party is a fantastic way to gear-up for use of a new toy, by the way. I had also acquired Sliquid Silver (the Rolls-Royce of Silicone lubricants) to partner with the dildo.
The dildo glittered in the light and was cool to the touch. This would not be a sensation that I enjoy, and therefore warmed up the toy in my hands first. I expected the lube to be long-lasting and smooth, which it was. A little bit goes a long way. The toy itself curved upward, pressed directly into the G-spot as anticipated, and felt flawless. It was not heavy during use, was easy to manipulate, and held temperature for 10 minutes post-use. This is handy to know in case you want a repeat affair or you are taking a short break in between orgasms. The base is flanged, which would make for a great anal toy as well. Clean-up was easy with simple hand soap and warm water. You can dry it with a towel or let it sit on the counter to dry.
Storage is also a question when considering the acquisition of a glass toy. Protecting it from scratches, impact, and maintaining cleanliness is of utmost importance. I store my toy in a padded, hand-sewn pouch. You can store glass in toy boxes or toy pillows (SP has storage boxes and toy pillows in the shop), padded baskets, padded pouches, or anything with reinforcement to keep your toy safe.
So, after the rigmarole, if you have been thinking of purchasing a glass toy or had no intent to own one out of fear that it may break, it is advised that you take the plunge. With varying shapes and sizes, you can find a toy that treats your G-Spot/P-Spot like a queen/king, or a toy that curves upward and back to ease pressure on your wrists during penetration. The time, energy, creativity, and love invested in the toy creation can definitely be accounted for with each and every orgasm that you have. You will find fewer materials that are as smooth, solid, and temperature-friendly as glass (steel aside), and your friends will undoubtedly be jealous of you, your orgasms, and your artful pleasure object! If not for any other reason, they also make delightful paperweights. 🙂
Enjoy!
