Protecting yourself goes beyond a hot night between the sheets. It’s about safety as well as security outside of the bedroom – this extends to your media messages and email. Once you send a text or photo to someone else, you have to trust them as well as their security habits. We do not recommend sending racy photos or texts over the internet. However, we know that many of you are going to do it anyway! So, without further adieu, here are some simple ways to engage in Safe Sexting.
Cut-It-Out
Crop, block, and edit away your face as well as any other identifying marks or unique features on your body. While that Marilyn mole is gorgeous, it’s also a dead give-away.It takes only one person to recognize that dragon-turned-phoenix tattoo on your thigh before you are being called into the boss’ office. Did your mother know about that tattoo by the way? Do you really want her to?
Should you be in the process of editing out your face from photos after you’ve taken them, do not blur your face, as that can be reversed in simple photo editing programs (Adobe, Photoshop). Cut it out entirely and then save the photo. If Photoshop can end blurry pics it can certainly undo your blurred image with one simple click of a button.
Strip (Data & Thumbnails)
So you’ve managed to keep your face out of the photo. Continue editing! You need to pay attention to geolocation information that can be traced to whom? To you. Geolocation information covers things such as where a photo was taken, when, and whether or not it is with your iPhone, for example.
Remember to remove data called EXIF data. Exchangeable Image File: the file format used by most digital cameras; it usually consists of the JPEG file format along with metadata tags. Your operating system on the computer can do this, and there are other apps available to assist you in this process to use with your smartphone.
Safe Sending
Love Google? Most people do. It’s also a great way to send photos. Remember that even if you are signed in, programs like Hangouts can save every photo you’ve sent. That one time you forget to sign out of your account? Someone else can gain access to your photos. Hangouts not only keeps a photo, it keeps an entire album! Handy if you want an album, not so handy if you do not want this information kept and it must therefore be manually deleted.
What can I do instead? Use encrypted programs to send your data. Require passwords, encrypt your .zip files. Furthermore, turn off logging of your text chats. Disable chat history from the get-go. Go back and delete conversations from your devices. It’s troublesome but worth a lot of the effort you’ve put into trying to remain anonymous (let’s face it – company servers back up everything, which is out of your control).
Communicate
You talk about safe sex with your partner, it’s time to talk about safe sexting. Is your partner or are your sexting partners taking the same precautions that you are? What you are submitting to them is sensitive material and should be taken care of as such. Ensure that they have established software to remotely wipe their phone in case of loss or theft.
It’s not as sexy or “in-the-moment” to take these precautions, however it is sexier than being the topic of discussion with your teenager’s friends or the newspapers (famous folks sext too *cough Anthony Weiner *cough) It’s also not sexy to dictate how your partner uses their gadgets, but it is nice to request that they maintain high security standards also.
Very informative!
